Did you know that you can fundraise on Petfinder straight from your pets’ profile pages? You’ll be reaching more than 7 million potential donors each month, and there’s virtually no effort on your part. In fact, there is already a “Sponsor Me” button on each of your pets’ profile pages — but if you’re not enrolled in the Petfinder Foundation’s Sponsor a Pet program, visitors are not able to use it to donate directly to you.
If you are not enrolled in Sponsor a Pet, the user who clicks that button will see a popup window that gives them the option to donate to the Petfinder Foundation. If you are enrolled in Sponsor a Pet, the window will show the pet’s photo and a prompt to donate to you. Here are examples of both pop-ups:
If you’re not signed up for SAP, you’re leaving money on the table: The minimum donation is $25 and the average donation is over $50! The Petfinder Foundation will collect your donations and mail you a check for the total, minus a 10% administrative fee, each quarter. You can log in to your account at any time to view your donations as well as donor contact information – and we encourage you to cultivate these donors so that they will continue to support your work in the future.
Ready to sign up?
Your organization does not need 501(c)(3) status and does not need to be based in the U.S. to participate in Sponsor a Pet. However, you do need two things:
- A bank account in your organization’s name (your Sponsor a Pet disbursement checks will be made out to your organization)
- Your EIN (Employer Identification Number). If you don’t have one, you can file for one here: http://www.irs.gov/Businesses/Small-Businesses-&-Self-Employed/Apply-for-an-Employer-Identification-Number-(EIN)-Online. (If your organization is in Canada, use your charitable registration number; if your organization is based in another country, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org.)
To get started, go to sap.petfinderfoundation.com and complete all the fields in the “Register Your Organization” section. (Once you’re registered, you will use this same page to log in to your account, in the section labeled “Already a Sponsor a Pet Member?”) After you’ve submitted your registration, you will receive an activation email at the address you listed as your primary contact email. Click the link provided in the email to activate your account. The Sponsor Me buttons on your pet profiles will update shortly!
Donations will be collected by the Petfinder Foundation and distributed approximately 15 days after the end of each quarter. Please contact email@example.com if you need additional assistance.
